Thread: mic/sound card issue

    Default mic/sound card issue

So basically I've had numerous people who are very good with computers try and help me with this issue. I have a asus p5k se motherboard that uses a realtek hd sound drive on windows xp. The soundrive works fine, but somewhere along the line my mic stoped being able to go through my computer (as in i can't speak in it). The mic works fine, and is recognized by the driver but i can't adjust the volume of it in input (it won't let me highlight it) and it's not muted or anything. The only thing that works is my stereo mix which when not muted plays sounds that normally the mic would be doing.

For example, i click the stereo mix off of mute and i go to calibrate my mic in speech, use sound recorder, ventrilo, etc and the sound going out of my speakers is what is recorded or played in place of what would normally be my voice in the microphone. I had a guy who was extremely good with computers guide me through unintalling and reinstalling my sound drive to see if it works and it still doesn't. The same issue remains. I've tried about everything with the settings and it still won't work. I want to fix this but it honestly might be easier to just get a new sound card since this is just frustrating beyond all believe.

here are some of the images of my settings. I can't change the option for what my voice recorder drop down menu.

    much thanks

also i have tested the mic on other computers and it works fine. I've tried both the pink plug in in the front and back and it's the same issue.

In your Realtek image, can you show us what is optioned when you click the Microphone tab.....thanks

    Alternatively,
    • Have you tried System Restore to before this annoying error started?
    • Have you got Skype installed? Reason being, it is easier to configure Microphone and sound if you have.
    • Are there any yellow or red warning signs in Device Manager?
    • Is the mic inbuilt into your monitor or an external Mic?
Have you priced your sound card? I agree, when this frustrating, it maybe better to replace it, but give us a go first to try to solve your issue.

    kind regards,

i can answer all those right away

the mic tab has nothing but sound cones for making the microphone clearer when spoken into and a calibration tool but it does the same thing as in speech, which is play what's going out my speakers if stereo mix is on.

    skype is not installed

no device manager warnings, first thing i checked

and no mic isnt built in it's plugged into the pink slot either in front or back they both don't work.

    thanks for the fast reply.

Have you tried the external Mic on another computer to see if it works? Microphones are very cheap, I would buy another if it was me.....

    How about System Restore option?

System Restore option may be your best bet.
If that doesnt work I would try removing Realtech mixer. Let windows run the mic.

I would take your full system specifications to a trusted IE shop and be guided by the IT technician who is there to advise you.

Alternatively if you post your specs here we can research it.
